As president of LAWASIA, it is my pleasure to extend a warm invitation to
all colleagues of the region to attend the forthcoming Children and the Law
Conference, a joint initiative of
The Law Society of Singapore and LAWASIA.The material to be discussed at this event will not only be of interest to family lawyers and their colleagues who work in related areas of law, but will also provide interest and stimulation to any in the wider community who have an active concern in how our societies care for the rights of their most vulnerable.
Natural disasters like the recent tsunami inevitably result in manyfold misfortunes for orphaned and other children including the possibility of illegal trafficking and need for foster care. The Conference will no doubt develop ideas for national and international legal remedies in this direction as well.
I commend the organising team on the subjects the Conference presents for discussion and am proud that LAWASIA’s name is associated with this worthy event.
This is the second Children and the Law Conference that has been supported by LAWASIA. Those who attended the first in Brisbane in June 2003 will recall its impact as a forum for discussion of legal and legally-related issues that extend to the very heart of civilised society. I have no doubt that this Conference will continue that tradition, and I encourage the widest participation by all who understand the need to give regional consideration to such matters.
