Exemption of Foreign Income – Benefit from It
The tax regime of Singapore has traditionally been on a territorial
basis - i.e. only income derived in Singapore, or income derived
overseas but received in Singapore, is subject to tax.
With increasing globalisation, Singapore has finally provided for
tax exemption of specified foreign-sourced income remitted to
Singapore on or after 1 June 2003. The exemption puts Singapore on
par with Malaysia, which granted 100% foreign-income exemption as
far back as 1995. Hong Kong, on the other hand, has never taxed
foreign sourced income.
This progressive approach ... [read

Life & Lawyers. Bananas & Business.
This week we feature an interview with Simon Tupman. Once a successful
but nevertheless disillusioned criminal defence litigator in England,
Simon did what many lawyers dream about: he followed his instinct and
got out of law! But not completely. Now based in Australia, he has
become a leading authority on lawyer and law firm development. He is
also an entertaining conference speaker and addresses organisations and
facilitates events worldwide.
He is the author of
Why Lawyers Should Eat Bananas, the best-selling practice and
professional development guide for lawyers looking to achieve more in
life. His new book,
Why Entrepreneurs Should Eat Bananas (Marshall Cavendish) has just
been launched and adapts the themes of his first book for all
entrepreneurial employers and employees.
We caught up with Simon on his recent trip to Singapore for a chat about
his latest exploits and his thoughts on some of the opportunities and
challenges facing professionals and entrepreneurs ... [read

‘Back to Basics. Forward to the Future.’ – The Law Society’s Future
of the Legal Profession Conference
16 Feb 2006, 9am-5.30pm, Supreme Court Auditorium, Singapore
This century is an exciting and evolutionary time for the legal
profession. Fundamental and sacred principles, including the lawyer’s
privileged relationship with clients and self regulation, are under
review and scrutiny. Lawyers have to re-think the way they manage their
practices in the context of changing client expectations, business
practices, international/cross-border initiatives, technological
advances and new business structures. The Law Society’s ‘The Future of
the Legal Profession’ Conference aims to promote an in-depth discussion
and sharing of ideas amongst members from small to large law practices
on the various issues facing our profession and law practices. Be part
of this rare opportunity to take stock of where our profession and law
practices are heading, and key issues and challenges in the next decade.

The Simplest Solution to Customer Satisfaction
“Thank you for calling XYZ Company. Your call is important to us but not
important enough for us to answer it. Please hold for eternity or leave
a message and a representative will contact you as soon as it is
convenient for us.”
If you’ve ever used the telephone to contact a business you can relate
to the frustration that can result from voice mail or automated
answering services. Undoubtedly, when they first became “the way to do
business” it was extremely annoying; however, times are changing, folks
are automating and imprudent business practices such as this are gaining
acceptance (or at least tolerance) ... [read

What’s the Buzz?
Negotiating for Success
13 December 2005 |
|
Harvard Business Review calls negotiation a ‘critical business skill’,
determining whether your company — or career — thrives or loses out to
more savvy competitors. It is a fundamental skill that is called upon
virtually every day, from the shop floor to the boardroom. Knowing how
to negotiate well is the key to increasing sales effectiveness,
smoothing customer relations, achieving workplace goals, resolving
personal conflict and just getting things done.
This basic course introduces our exclusive ‘Global Negotiation Method’,
which combines the interest-based negotiation approach developed at
Harvard University — proven consistently to be the most effective method
for reaching value-building, sustainable agreements — with the
time-honored Asian values of face, heart, trust, balance, relationship
and communal obligations.
